The Cheese Museum Amsterdam

The time has arrived for me to write about my Amsterdam trip highlight – The Cheese Museum.

Before heading to the Anne Frank museum we did some cheese tasting. Did you know that Dutch cheese has more than 600 years long tradition and the names of different sorts of cheese are often taken from different cities in the Netherlands – Gouda, Edam, Leerdammer, Leyden, Maaslander, Maasdam, etc?

The cheese museum is a shop with also an exhibition part and where the staff wears traditional Dutch clothes. We tasted the different varieties of traditional Dutch Gouda cheese and then we visited the Gouda cheese museum where there were educational videos and pictures about the history and the production of Dutch cheese.

There is also a photo booth where we dressed up as Dutch farmers and took a picture, well, a few.

So if you’re a big fan of cheese and you are going to the Anne Frank museum, you should definitely visit the cheese museum which is right across the street. Just a heads up! The admission is free of charge, but you’ll probably end up buying a lot of cheese!

Anne Frank House| Amsterdam

Anne Frank’s story is pretty well known worldwide and I remember reading her diary when I was only 15 years old and being already very shocked with all the events. Now 13 years later, visiting The Anne Frank House in Amsterdam had a really big impact on me.

Of course, as we get older we see things differently and understand every little detail, but this was a very special experience that I believe everyone should go through.

The Anne Frank House was established on 3 May 1957 in cooperation with Otto Frank, Anne Frank’s father. They are an independent non-profit organisation that runs a museum in the house where Anne Frank went into hiding and their goal is to increase awareness of Anne’s life story all over the world.

We were not allowed to take photos inside and there was no point on doing it because you wouldn’t be able to feel it through the photos. You need to be there and I recommend you do it after reading her diary and the story in her own words. They have a guide during the visit and they will explain everything to you, but I believe it would be more impactful for you if you know the story already and then let the guide be your reminder during the house tour.

Natural History Museum| London

London isn’t only about the fancy restaurants and cute places with delicious tea and cakes. Sorry if my blog has only sent you that idea so far. There’s so much more to it and the Natural History Museum is just one example of that.

The museum is home to life and earth science specimens including some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, paleontology and zoology. Their collections are quite fascinating, especially given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin.

You might recognise the museum by its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons, the large Diplodocus cast that dominated the vaulted central hall before it was replaced in 2017 with the skeleton of a blue whale hanging from the ceiling.

If you’re visiting London I would definitely suggest a visit to the Natural History Museum, not only because of the amazing and interesting things you will find inside but also because has an easy access and the entry is completely free.
