Our Trip to Bath

I’ve been wanting to visit Bath since I moved to England and now that we have our own car is so much easier to just go on a road trip. If you’ve never even heard of Bath, it’s a town set in the rolling countryside of southwest England, it’s famous for its natural hot springs and 18th-century Georgian architecture.

We checked in at The Old Mill Hotel where we spent only a night. It’s a simple hotel with really nice views of the river Avon. I must say I didn’t enjoy the breakfast. There wasn’t a lot of choice and there was no cheese, at all. Cheese is just too important for me, so I was disappointed. We didn’t spent much time at the hotel because we wanted to explore Bath as much as possible.

Early in the morning we headed to the Thermae spa and it was one of the best experiences I had in my life. I’m a very big fan of spas but I’m a bigger fan of a rooftop pool, especially when it has such a beautiful view. So here is a list of the rooms we’ve tried and what I thought of each:

The Roman Steam Room – with hand-crafted, traditional stone seating and  fluted columns, the steam was infused with the stimulating aroma of botanicals and flowers. It was too much steam for me though so I didn’t even last 3 minutes inside.

The Georgian Steam Room – Elegant surroundings, warm light and garden scenes fill the space, while water trickles from an ornate fountain. This was one of my favourites because of the floral fragrance and steam.

The Infrared Room – It transmits soothing infrared waves of light deep into the muscles and joints. I kind of freaked out when I started seeing all of the veins in my body, but got used to it after a few minutes and it was really relaxing.

The Ice Chamber – In contrast to the warmth of the steam rooms and sauna, it was great to step into a distinctly different environment with menthol-infused mist swirling around a giant ice trough. I took a handful of flaked ice from the trough and rubbed gently over my body to reduce surface temperature, close skin pores and gently exfoliate.

The Celestial Relaxation Room – Another dimension with twinkling lights, five heated loungers, warm fragrant air, and calming sounds. I think it would be nicer it if the temperature was higher.

The Experience Showers – I’ve never tried Chromotherapy before but I’m definitely a fan! The piano music playing in the background turned it into a perfect experience.

Besides these rooms we enjoyed a session at the indoor pool and the rooftop pool, which was pure heaven.

For lunch, we had in mind trying a local pub so we didn’t make any reservation and just started walking until we found something. And that’s when we spotted a Spanish restaurant and our love for tapas made us quickly forget about the pub. The restaurant was La Perla and the service was really good, especially because we got to practice our Spanish.

After lunch we went for a walk around town to check a few local stores but the weather wasn’t great and we had to return home that evening so we left with plans to go back during summer time and spend a few more days trying other spas and restaurants.

Home Foot Spa

Don’t worry, I’m not going to suggest one of those big machines that give great foot massages but that takes a lot of space in your house and you rarely use them. Maybe while it’s new, but then you just can’t bother.

I want to tell you about the simple and practical things I do to take care of my feet and that you can also apply to your care routine. Because let’s be honest, our feet go through a lot. Whether it’s heels, flat shoes that are just too flat, working hours, hot weather, cold weather and just standing has an impact on our feet.

It’s important to take care of them and to do it frequently. Here’s what I do:

Once a month – I use a pumice stone and sometimes a foot brush to gently exfoliate my feet, at least once a month. If I have the time to do it more frequently I do, but this helps to remove all the dead skin and leave your feet feeling extremely soft.

Once a week – I use foot socks to deeply moisturise the skin. I’ve recently been using the ones from Superdrug. My favourite is the one with enriched with Tea Tree, Peppermint and Vitamin E. I’m also a big fan of the honey and almond one. These help to soothe and soften dry, rough and cracked heels. After using them I always feel like I’m walking on clouds. Daily – I make sure I go for daily walks because this helps with blood circulation, not only in my feet but also my legs. I also make sure they get enough rest when I get home and that I’m barefoot as much as possible. If it’s cold, just wear socks! Make sure your feet aren’t stuck inside your shoes for too many hours because this will affect them in the long run.
